Tipping Point – Malcolm Gladwell

Teachers must understand the concept of “tipping point'” because we deal with large numbers on a consistent basis. We may think that nothing is happening or that there is no effect of what we had been saying to the students for the past 1 ¬†month. In reality something is about to happen – reaching a tipping point. If we continue a litle bit more along what¬†we had been doing the students would have reached the “aha” moment and everything that we have been saying will have become suddenly clear to them! Gladwell compares this to the moment when enough people have gotten the flu bug for it to become an epidemic. His book give various instances when some item of clothing become the “in” fashion, or when crimes suddenly declined in New York in the late 80s. Understanding how tipping point works is there fore crucial for everyone dealing with large numbers. I shall not spoil the fun by telling you about the “stickness factor” or the “mavens”..so kindly go enjoy yourself.
